ACTIVITY ONE

ACTIVITY SHEET TO PRINT OUT.  

Read this story Malcolm.  At the end of the story, answer these questions.  

  1. What made the gum tree grow higher?
  2. How did Ngarmarna feel about being up so high?
  3. Were the two nephews 'nice boys' to do this to Ngarmarna?
  4. What did Ngarmarna turn into?
  5. Can you see Ngarmarna?  How?
  6. Here is a picture of Ngarmarna when he is up in the sky.  Print out this picture and label it "This is Ngarmarna when he is high in the sky."
  7. Here is a picture of Ngarmarna when he is coming down.  Print out this picture and label it:  "This is Ngarmarna when he is low in the sky."
  8. Malcolm, you might like to look at lots of other pictures of Ngarmarna as he climbs up and down in the sky.
  9. Can you find other pictures of Ngarmarna on the Internet.  Open this search engine and type in the words 'pictures of the moon'.

ACTIVITY TWO
Send a postcard to a friend in the class.  You could send it to Jaden.  His email address is jadlan@beenleigss.eq.edu.au 

You get to choose the picture you want and insert the message you would like.  Make sure your message is interesting.  Maybe you could tell him about the dreaming story you have just read in Activity One. 


ACTIVITY THREE
Look at these beautiful pictures of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.  Look at them all by choosing the first one and using the arrow keys at the bottom of each picture.  Pick your favourite three.  Print them out and paste them in your special book.  Under each picture write.  'This is a picture of ..........  I like this picture because .....' 

ACTIVITY FOUR

Malcolm, you are going to go on the Iga Warta tour in the Flinders Ranges.  Click on the arrows at the bottom of each picture to go on the tour.  Print out a picture of Cliff Coulthard, paste it into your special book and put a speech bubble from his mouth talking about something on the tour. 
 


ACTIVITY FIVE

Malcolm, read this dreaming story 'We Came from the Land'.  On a map of Australia label Ceduna, The Great Australian Bight and the Nullabor Plain.  Paste this into your special book. 


ACTIVITY SIX

Here you can here some aboriginal words from the Yindjibarndi language.  Click on the pictures to hear the voices. 


ACTIVITY SEVEN
Do you lake kangaroo soup?  Have you ever tasted it?  Look at how it is made here by the children of Roebourne Primary.  After you have read this site, write the instructions in your special book.  Your sentences should all start like this.
1.  The first thing to do is .........
2.  Then we ........
3.  Next we need to ........
4.  When the skin is off we ........
5.  We make a delicious ..........
6.  Now it's time to .......
7.  Finally .........

ACTIVITY EIGHT

Print out and label these Australian animals.  Do you have aboriginal words for these animals?  Use these words for your labels. Paste this into your special book. 


ACTIVITY NINE
Albert Namatjira was an aboriginal painter.  Go the school library and find a picture of his famous painting called 'Ghost Gum'.  Print out this picture and colour it in the same colours as he used.  Paste your masterpiece in your special book.   
 
ACTIVITY TEN

Here are some children learning about aboriginal x-ray and dot painting.  Look at what the young children have made.  Malcolm, can you do a painting in either of these two styles.  If you need to, you can go to the school library and get a book out on aboriginal painting to help you before you start.  Paste your finished work in your special book.  


 ACTIVITY ELEVEN

Malcolm, go this wonderful site all about bunyips.  Read the dreaming stories.  The computer will read them to you if the press the button that looks like a speaker.  Play the games and make some of the bunyips.  You also have a book about bunyips in your folder.  Read this book and complete the activity sheet that goes with the book.  


ACTIVITY TWELVE
Festivals are a lot of fun.  Read the book 'Festivals' from your folder.  Complete the cloze activity using the book.   Look at the children dancing in these photos.  Look closely at them all (click on each one to make them bigger).  Choose your favourite one to send to Jaden.  His email address is jadlan@beenleigss.eq.edu.au

Next, you can take six digital photos from the book 'Festivals' and make up your own slide show about festivals to share with the class.  You will have to choose carefully and write your own words below each picture.  Use StarOffice (File, New, Presentation) to do this.
