ENHANCEMENT

Activity 4

  • Download the board game ‘Keepin’ it Fair for the Tortoise and the Hare’.  It is suggested that students save this file to a hard drive for future use (File, Save As – and give the file a unique name, e.g. Mary and Jane.doc).   As this unit of work will take some time to complete, students will need to open this file to continue the game each time they work on this unit.  Students will work in pairs at a computer.  They will have the board game open and the Internet open concurrently.  One student will adopt the role of the ‘hare’ and the other student will adopt the role of the ‘tortoise’.  Students will work through a range of interactive internet sites to determine when two outcomes of an event have an equal chance.  In the event of an identical outcome, both the hare and the tortoise will move one space on the board game.  If the hare wins, the hare moves 2 spaces forward on the board game.  If the tortoise wins, the tortoise moves 2 spaces forward on the board game.  Whichever player is in front at the end of all activities, or whichever player passes the finish line first is the overall winner.
  • Explain the rules of the game to students.  Explain the concept of the game to students:  the runners will start together and both will have an equal chance of winning the race because the variable of ‘ability’ has been removed.
